Tarot are a mid-15th century deck of playing cards that utilizes 78 cards as opposed to the standard 52 in modern playing card decks.
Tarot were, and still are, used in games such as French Tarot and Italian Tarocchini, both early versions of trick taking card games (rack-&-suit games) similar to Bridge and Whist.
In the late 18th-century Tarot cards began to be used in divination and fortune telling.
The Rider-Waite deck is the most well known modern deck of Tarot cards. Based on the instructions of academic and mystic A. E. Waite and hand illustrated by Pamela Colman-Smith the cards were originally published by the Rider Company in 1909.
It is estimated that more than 100 million copies of the deck exist in more than 20 countries.
